I'd spend a little more time making sure that you know it even better, then get yourself to the point where you're actually completely comfortable with it. I hope you are not expecting many major releases, much less innovation, much less competitiveness, from a tiny company, with a teeny number of engineers, a number of whom are full-time focused of fixing the overwhelming number of reported major defects in the software.

Topaz has less than a dozen employees, a backlog of bugs that causes the few customers that they do have to waste far more of their time than the software saves them and charges extra for "pro" features like B&W, Dehaze, micro-contrast and HSL. I think a reasonable person would consider it a smart thing to follow the lead of the aforementioned companies. DxO acquired it in a fire sale and will abandon it too. In summary, Nik Collection has been outright abandoned by Nik Software (the company), then abandoned by Nikon, then abandoned by Google.

First component of the Nik Collection announced by Nik Multimedia, Feb 2006.I don't think that the approach that you're describing (LR-direct-to-TS) is.ideal.įirst, as more of a side note, let's talk about the Nik Collection: The adjustments function as a type of layer. Topaz studio now offers masking for all adjustments, giving an ability to produce local edits. I find PS to be overkill for most images that I process Reviewed things from time to time and tweaked.įilters are just shortcuts to what you could do in PS should you care to learn. It took years of tweaking to get it where I want it. The only pre-adjusted items are temp, tint, sharpening and colour noise with defaults set to 25. You can have it if you build it but it isn't automatic out of the box. So I'm so sure about a glorified out of the camera look. They expect you to tweak, create a profile or use a camera profile. Not sure how many times I read about how poor the Adobe Colour profile was. Unlike Capture and others where colour, NR, sharpening are pre-applied most you have to do yourself unless you add them the defaults or use pre-sets. Well actually that was not until last week when they made improvements to the Auto feature, if you choose to use it. My question was specifically about Topaz Studio and where it can fit in a processing workflow. The Nik products do a great job with most of my images. For my purposes, LR works just fine as a DAM and I like the non-destructive RAW work flow although, lately, I am not using LR for much editing except some basic things like exposure, cropping, white/black point setting.

I find PS to be overkill for most images that I process (I just photograph for my own enjoyment). I have Topaz (bought the plugins) and NIk. You are making a whole bunch of invalid assumptions. Almost all of these filters are just shortcuts to what you could do in PS should you care to learn.

In any even you can download a free trial of the Topaz plugins, at least they used to let you do that, to see if they work for you. The ancient Nik plug-ins are kind of pointless to me if not used as a layer, ditto for Topaz, OnOne et al. LR encourages a glorified out of camera jpeg approach with DAM but that is a very myopic paradigm.
